WHO REGULATES USTs?
In 1984, Congress created a federal program to regulate USTs that contain petroleum or other certain hazardous substances to minimize future tank leaks due to corrosion and/or structural defects. Congress directed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish requirements and standards for operations, tank design and installation, leak detection, spill and overfill control, corrective action, and tank closure.
The EPA recognizes that state and local governments are in the best position to oversee USTs.
States may have more stringent regulations than the federal requirements. If you are interested in UST requirements, program information can be acquired from the following state agencies in our territory:
